Some assistance with child proofing the internet for a youngster?
I have a little project that I have an idea how I’m going to do, but would like some other suggestions and a second set of eyes to look from all my great fellow Answer-ers here that I’ve come to know over the past couple of months.
Very shortly, I will be moving in with my girlfriend, who has a 6 year old. 6 going on 14, and loves to mess around on the computer. I am looking to block certain websites. I have multiple PC’s in the house, and already have one set up for her. I was thinking about using one of the PC’s I have as a Proxy server for the rest, and using software such as WebSense or something similar to filter out certain content. This is going to be a pain in the butt, and time consuming. Any suggestions otherwise? I have not seen a decent filter out that is installed on a home PC. I’ve used WebSense on a larger domain, and it works wonders, giving me the initial idea. I definitely want to block certain keywords and sites that a child should not see.
Please note, that I am completely against spy software. Please do not suggest this. I find it obtrusive, and invasive. She should have her privacy to a certain extent, but filtering is the way I want to go.
I’m a Senior Helpdesk Analyst, and have been in the field since I was 22. Currently 28, so no need to use laymens terms. ![]()
Thanks in advance!!!

John asks…
Data compression algorithm help?
I’m doing a dossier for my IB Computer Science class my senior year in High School. I chose to do a compression program, because I didn’t want to do a boring database management program (haha). I have to write it eventually in JAVA, but I’ll be prototyping in a variety of languages, so I just need a jump start on the basic logic of it (meaning I don’t need language specific code). I also would like to do this without the assistance of any pre-coded dll’s. So yes, I know this will be a very ‘down-n-dirty’ project to tackle, but it’s necessary for the guidelines of the dossier.
I’ve racked my mind on the subject trying to come up with an equation or algorithm. So far I’ve decided that I want to work with numbers, not ascii.
So, to accomplish that, I know how to convert the encoded ascii of a file to binary (which would be 8 times as long) and then from binary to decimal (reducing the length to up to 3 times as long as the original data). From decimal I’d like to convert that data to something smaller than the original size of the data.
If anyone has any basic logic of how to do this that would help me out (and I suspect it will most likely rely on some mathematical equation) or any pseudo-code, that would be awesome ![]()
I greatly appreciate it, guys!
I do know how to convert from different bases.
And let’s forget that this has anything to do with recognizing the characters from a file into ascii. I actually need help getting started on the algorithm since I already have a method to get the data into decimal form (base 10).

Simple math says that deporting all illegal aliens would actually save us $108 billion dollars in the first year and $338.3 billion each year after that… Very interesting…
Agnes: very good you can do math too… Lets do some more:
Iraq war in total 2003-2009 (6 years): 2.2 trillion…
Illegal imigration for the past ten years alone:
$338.3B x 10 years= $3.383trillion
How long has it been a problem?… How long has it been costing us $338.3B/year?… How many more decades will we waste, losing $3.3883T?…

Excellent resume.
While searching for a job or even after you find a job, I would suggest expanding skills in .NET area.
Average annual salary for .NET is currently $60,000 to $70,000. You can prove your skills by building a portfolio of web sites to demonstrate what you can actually do.
Http://idealprogrammer.com – has 700+ hours of .NET video tutorials. They can provide you with a broad overview of the .NET field.
Http://pm.idealprogrammer.com – has an organized syllabus and a checklist that you can use to monitor which videos you have watched.
Good Luck and Hang in there…

Journalistic grammar rules?
In journalistic writing, I know there are differences in punctuation and grammar compared to normal expository writing. In journalism, are the names of seasons (fall, spring, summer…) capitalized? Are cardinal directions (North, South…) capitalized? Years in school (Senior, sophomore, etc.) capitalized? and names of areas of study (Computer Science, journalism, economics…) capitalized? Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Free PC Help staff answers:
Lowercase all seasons unless they are part of a formal name, such as: Summer Olympics, Dartmouth Winter Carnival. (Lowercase examples: Last fall, we bought a house. I’ll graduate after spring semester.)
Lowercase all cardinal directions unless they are part of a formal name: North Dakota, South Avenue. (Lowercase examples: Birds head south for the winter. She lives in northern Pennsylvania.)
Lowercase years in school unless they are part of a formal name: Clinton High School Senior Class. (Although some editors would prefer that even this usage is lowercased, too.) (Lowercase examples: She is a high school junior. They are planning a senior class trip.)
Lowercase areas of study unless they appear in a formal title: Bachelor of Science in Journalism, Society of Professional Journalists. (Lowercase examples: I studied journalism. She will get a degree in mathematics.)
As you can see, the default for most words is uncapitalized unless they are part of a formal title or formal name.
