In my life I have had various careers from working as an assistant park manager for a family fun park, technical manager for Gateway Computers, senior level support technician for Compaq , manager for a cell phone store, and the system administrator/warehouse manager for my parents furniture business. Looks like management is your most common thread. If you’d like to be more specific, how about something like:

— Technical manager
— Services manager
— Process manager

or a combo (which may lead to more opportunity):
— Technical / Services Manager
— Administrator / Technical Manager

Good luck!!

Would you consider another thought on Assisted Living that might work for us Senior Citizens?

Please comment – I received this from a dear friend today – I like the concept very much…

Food for thought:

Let’s put the seniors in jail, and the criminals in nursing homes.

This way the seniors would have access to showers, hobbies, and walks.

They’d receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment , wheelchairs,
etc.

And they’d receive money instead of paying it out.

They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly if they fell
or needed assistance.

Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to
them.

A guard would check on them every 20 minutes, and bring their meals and snacks to their
cell.

They could have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.

They could have access to a library, weight room, spiritual counseling, pool, and
education.

Simple clothing , shoes, slippers, P.J.’s and legal aid would be free, on request.

Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard — with gardens.

Each senior could have a personal computer, TV, radio, and daily phone calls.

There would be a board of directors to hear complaints, and the guards would have a code
of conduct, that would be strictly adhered to.

The criminals would get cold food, be left all alone, and unsupervised.

Lights off at 8 p.m., and showers once a week.

Live in a tiny room , and pay $4,500.00 per month and have no hope of ever getting out.

Check with me later for my new prison address.
I would guess that the point of this old joke is not to be taken literally but the comparison in many areas in our country of the amount of budget expended on criminal housing & adequacy vs housing & care for the Aged. The workhouses of prison are not – the high security prisons are air-condition, properly staffed, medically attended. Few indigent Aged will be afforded the compassionate attn that would be proper – even at a lower cost.. We tend to be much more benevolent towards criminals – even excessively.

Thanks, you really have made my day – you do have some good ideas written in your question. I think a lot of seniors would go for it. Ha ha. And I am just a member of a senior community reading for enjoyment on this site. Have a great day and keep your ideas coming. I enjoyed this one so much.

Sharon asks…

A little help please.?

I am currently in my senior year of high school at the moment, and of course am having a hard time deciding on what I want to do with my life. I think I have narrowed my decisions down and am looking into owning my own business selling computers and offering computer assistance. So my question is, What kind of degree do I need to get my hopes going? I know I will probably need a degree in something to do with business management and something to do with computer hardware and software. Also what are the names f the degree’s I will be needing?

Thx for all your help

First of all, you need to harness your knowledge and skills in computers.
I have two suggestions for your major:
BS Computer Science [more on software] or BS Computer Engineering [more on hardware].

To address your management skills, there are other courses that you can take as electives; such as
Business Management or Business Administration.

You can ask around in the university you intend to enter. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to help you out. :) I hope I did.

Lisa asks…

Can I get financial assistance (towards bills) for my family if I go back to college?

So here’s my situation. I’m 24-years-old I dropped out in HS (halfway through my senior year; WORST MISTAKE EVER) due to some really poor decisions and a lot of moving around. My dilemma is this, I have recently become unemployed (June 21st) and I’m having a bit of trouble finding work again. Especially here lately. I don’t like to lie to people, or even on applications. But I always put that I have a GED in hopes the employer wont require me to bring in a copy. As of late I have been getting a lot of requests for employers but they want me to bring my GED or diploma. This causes a problem in which I cannot show up for an interview to accept the employment.

So getting my GED is becoming a high priority right now. I can get some part time work but most of the places wont pay even close enough to touch my bills. So what I’m actually asking here is. Can I get some sort of financial assistance if I were to get my GED and step forward into college to pursue a career choice? I don’t mean a FAFSA to cover my schooling costs, I’m almost positive I would get that no problem. But I’m trying to figure out if they would actually help with my bills and expenses for my family until I get out of school? I am looking to work part time evening so I could attend school during the day, spend time with my kids, and then go to work 20 hours a week in a warehouse during the evening.

I might have strayed too far from the actual topic, and I apologize for that. But I can’t seem to find anything that could answer my questions. Everything is coming up as financial aid to actually go to school.

Also, for schooling I am looking to go to community college for computer science and follow up with attending a university to focus on computer repair and building as this is something I enjoy, and have a lot of personal experience with.

Thanks in advance.
Also, I live in Ohio. My wife doesn’t work she’s full-time mother with our kids. We had a lot of trouble with the certified babysitters we were provided through the state. So we are much more comfortable with her being with them. My children are 2 boys a 3 1/2 year old and a 1 year old. Just in case that helps with anything.
To respond to the first answer. I am married, we would be willing for her to work part time just as long as it cooperates with our schedule. So we would both be willing to work something part time. We just want to avoid needing a babysitter, especially provided by the state.

Your #1 first priority is to get your GED. Most community colleges offer very low cost GED prep classes – maybe, $25 for the 10 week class? You may not have that much time, though. Instead, you could look through a GED prep book on your own – library or bookstore. You write very well, so I suspect that there may only be certain things you need to review for the GED, and that you’re capable of doing that via a book, rather than needing a formal class.

Sign up for the next GED test session. Get the GED under your belt as quickly as possible. That’s the first step.

Once that’s done, move on from there. Community college is an excellent first step. In fact, you might be surprised – you could major in computer science there, get your associates, and at the same time, via the cc, also do your A+ and other certifications. By the time you get out of school, you’ll qualify for computer help desk work – including computer repair and building. And in fact, even while you study, you should be able to get a part-time job on the Geek Squad or at the Apple Genius Bar, based on your studies and pending certifications. So it’s possible that you may be able to start making this career transition while you’re studying. In fact, even at the warehouse – within your current company, they may have a need for someone with your tech skills. After you’ve worked there for a while, tell them what you’re studying, and find out what’s needed in order to advance into the type of position you want there.

Now for the bad news: the amount of aid you get is dependent on your income, and I don’t know the size of your bills. Maybe you’ll qualify for enough aid to cover bills and etc. But I’m thinking that most likely you will not. You won’t know until you try, though – so try. Apply to the cc, file the FAFSA, and see how it all turns out.

Another option may need to be to go to school part-time, and work full-time – if you can find a full time job… Or two part-time jobs. But again, first priority is that GED, so that you can get even a part-time job.

And the cc will likely offer some of your classes online, which can help re: spending time with your kids. You can work on schoolwork after they’re in bed. You’ll be tired, but you’re a dad – you understand tired.

Please avoid any of those for-profit/online schools. Employers strongly dislike them. Focus on the traditional, brick and mortar schools you mentioned – the cc, and a real uni afterwards – and you’ll be fine.
