David asks…

Technology Management or Network Engineering WORTH READING?

Some questions about pursuing jobs in Information Technology Network/Support/Management sector.

Quick facts about me:
1) College student, looking to change A.A. in General Education to an A.S. in either Technology Management or Computer (Engineering) Networking
2) Excellent in all other classes (writing, speaking, philosophy) but mediocre at mathematics. GPA = 3.5
5) If I do Networking: A.S. Network Engineering > B.A.S. Technology Management w/ Network Engineering specialty > CCNA > 3-4year/experience > CCNP > 2-3year/experience > CCNIE
6) If I do Technology Management: A.S. Technology Management > B.A.S. Technology Management w/ UNKNOWN specialty > Support Certificate > A+ Microsoft Certificate > 2-3year/experience > LINIX/UNIX certificate

Questions:

Enjoy doing both, but feel Network Engineering has better job opportunity, creativity, and pay advancement. From your experience, which should I do? Is this incorrect?

Will be taking classes at a (respected, B rating) community college with 4-year program for cost, advisement, and intensity of classes (smaller, hands-on, better professors). Will this hurt my opportunities?

Is degree even necessary for Computer Network Engineering/Administration, or are having certifications and experience more preferable to employers?

Much thanks,

Shaun Dean

I’m not sure how much help this will be, because it really depends upon what the job market is like where you’re at as well as what the program is like at your college.

I started out going for an MS in Telecommunication, which is not too different from the Network Engineering you’ll be experiencing. It’s very math intensive. The program I was in was geared primarily toward students who had undergrad degrees in electrical engineering (I have a BA in Communication). There were circuit diagrams and analysis, wave forms and calculus involved. This may or may not pose a problem for you – the community college experience is going to be different from a graduate program at a large university. But networking has a lot of math, especially at the physical layer. I used Schaum’s Guides (think of them as Cliff’s Notes for sciences) to try and catch up. They can be helpful. You might also talk to someone who is actually in the program to find out how they perceive it.

I think networking is a much better choice, career-wise. Before investing in more classes, you might look into some certifications first. See how you cope with them and if you enjoy the kind of challenge they pose. Personally, I’ve worked with too many clueless morons with MBAs and Technology Management degrees to have any respect for them.

I am 22 years old. I did as everyone said, go to school. Get a degree. Well I graduated last spring with my Associate of Applied Science in computer networking and service. I have yet to find a job. I have designed a few websites on my own but never have worked for a company. Why do people go to school ? I have even applied for simple jobs customer service, tech support, sales, etc… Nothing? Do people think I want to be payed to much? If any one knows of any jobs in Dalton,GA please let me know. Advise me.. I need help. Thanks and God Bless Everyone
I have looked outside of my area. Upto 50 miles outside my area. I feel people are intemidated with my resume. I have accomplished a lot in such a little time. Should I not even list these things on my resume? Is dumber better?

Have you tried looking outside of the area that you live? You may have to move to do what you want.

Are there any computers jobs that don’t require on call?

I have been in Network Administrator for more then 8 years now, and I am tired of being on call all the time. What computer careers are out there, that are more 9 to 5 ish? (Other then programming)

I was looking at Computer Repair and Desktop Support but I can’t seem to find out if they are on call as well.

Thanks in advance!

Large corporations that run 9-5 will be more “normal”…..those that aren’t a technology R&D business. Banking for e.g. Computer repair if working for yourself, or again a more 9-5 company…..You just have to think of companies where computers running off hours are not an “issue”….of course upgrades or new installs to their system will require off hours support. I’d look to the back rooms of larger companies that run systems to support a business that is more normal hours…….(no 24/7 personnel)…..

How can I print to a network printer that doesn’t support my os?

Ok so here’s my scenario. I have a Hp printer that works fine with the computer it is connected to. My laptop runs windows 7 but the hp printer doesn’t support windows 7. Is there any way I can send the job from my laptop to the computer the printer is connected to and have it rendered from there?

Free PC Help staff answers:

You still have to install the printer driver so the computer can interact with the computer.

I would be willing to bet money that the generic HP driver built into Windows 7 will work with the printer.
