Steven asks…

to which companies should a marketing campaign be directed to advertise a computer rental business?

Aside from computer rentals, this company also offers event technology services, Computer Network Sales, Service and Support along with the development of software solutions for the medical industry.

Free PC Help staff answers:

Find a small, but growing company. They might not be able to afford to purchase the computers right away.

Larger companies usually already have this established. Look to start ups involved with the local university/college.

Carol asks…

software engineering question?

which would suit me best if i want to follow in the steps of a software engineer

Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) Degrees
Computer Networking?

Computer Support Services?

Electronic & Computer Technology ?

or
Associate in Science (A.S.) Degrees
Computer Information Systems ?
hmm. which would be the best leading up to the 4 year bs degree in software engineering. because right now im in a 2 year college.

Free PC Help staff answers:

What you really want is a 4 year BS degree in Software Engineering or Computer Science.

The only one you list that is even close would be the last one (CIS) but even that is a big stretch.

There are options to get a 4 year degree. For example http://www.tesc.edu is a good US accredited choice. Http://www.degreeinfo.com is also a good resource.

David asks…

Setting up a small computer support business (Locally) what do I need?

To start with I should explain my background and the services I aim to offer.

Im 20 years old and have been involved with computers since birth (When I was left at home with my dad he had me sat next to him whilst he worked on the home PC)

When I was 4 I was using basic windows systems.
When I was 6 I got my first computer running the then “new” Windows 95
Since then i’ve built over 20 systems and fixed many more than I can count.
I have extensive Windows experience and a limited Mac and Linux Background

What I aim to offer is a local go to service for computer issues ranging from. Needs a virus scan to corrupted MBRs. I will also offer to install new components, build machines from scratch, “Clean” existing machines both logical and physically (Dust and dirt inside and outside the case) and configure networks.

I have at home a high performance desktop running Win 7 Ultimate.
An old PC currently running Linux Fedora and running as a file server storing all my films and music so they can be played from any machine on the network.

I have a second Linux machine that operates as a Firewall and router for my home network.

I have two Monitors one of which Is supporting the Linux box and the other for the Windows machine. Im planning to invest in a KVM switch to allow me to use one of these monitors for at least one more system. The plan being to be given a PC which has a problem and be able to instantly connect it to the existing Keyboard Mouse and Monitor.

In addition I will be creating a website that lists contact information and lists the services on offer.

Any advice on what I can do differently what I can offer or what I need to know about setting this sort of thing up would be great. Im based in England London.

Thanks in advance

There’s money in it-just. You have to remember that there are thousands of schoolkids that can do exactly the same as you. You need to do everything connected with PCs; Networking, remote maintenance, virus removal, repairs, data recovery, data backup, email networking (like Blackberry) etc. Etc.
You need to be competitive but not charge too little. Unfortunately the home PC owner probably won’t like spending much over £100, so you will probably be charging £20-£50 a visit. Will this cover transport (you may have to bring machine home) etc. How many jobs can you fit in one day? 2 or 3? Probably depends on distance from base.
It can be done, but you need to be good (get repeat business), competitive and know how to solve any problem thrown at you.
My son started like you and was being paid for fixing PCs at about 12 years old. Now he is doing networks, databases, websites (most things in fact).
If it helps this is the company he works with. Http://www.abcict.co.uk/

Laura asks…

What path should I take if I’m interested in Network Security and/or Computer Forensics?

I need to know from an education perspective and any certifications as well. Currently I am in technical support and customer service.

Free PC Help staff answers:

Computer forensics wise you can do an EnCE to get EnCase Certified Examiner, this qualification revolves around using Encase software and forensics methodologies, a CCFE to get Certified Computer Forensics Examiner which is generally geared towards law enforcement or the SANS institute provide GCFA to get GIAC Certified Forensic Analyst. SANS are a highly respected organisation within the security world. Many other qualifications/certifications are available, you just need to find what suits you and how to pay for it! You can always try to find a junior/trainee position and the company should guide you through what is required.

There are a lot some excellent resources on the Internet for personal development and good challenges http://old.honeynet.org/misc/chall.html and http://computer-forensics.sans.org/community/challenges/ which are great for learning. Hope that helps.

George asks…

How can I find out if DISCover.exe came already installed in my computer?

I keep getting a pop up from Trend Micro saying suspicious activity blocked. The program being blocked is DISCover.exe. I went into Trend Micro options and blocked that program but the pop up continues, every minute or so.
Support from Trend Micro told me to go into Windows Task Manager and click End Process. When I do that a box pops up saying that might cause undesired results including loss of data and system instability… Within the Task Manager window I noticed that there are 3 user names listed, Susie (which is what I named my computer), Network Service, and System. What is the difference between those 3 things and can I determine anything based on what user name the DISCover.exe has? If anyone can even understand what I’m saying, please help. That pop up is driving me nuts and it does interrupt whatever it is I’m doing when it pops up. My typing or scrolling is paused for a second every time it happens. Thanks

Free PC Help staff answers:

Try HousecallTrendMicro.com online scanner its data base is larger then your on board anti-virus data base and it might determine if it is a intruder or not
