Michael asks…

Which occupation is the better choice.?

I am interested in computers, and am very good with the applications involved. But I do not want to put together computers.
There are a couple occupations that I am looking in to studying in college.
A. ) Microcomputer Support Specialist
and
B. ) Computer Network Specialist.

I’ve always thought being a Project Manager would be a good occupation to go into because people will always need Project Managers. What do you think I should do?
Please take into effect of Salary, Job Outlook, etc…

Free PC Help staff answers:

If you want some respect and your considering Salary, Job Outlook etc, then I suggest you should choose the second option or rather i would suggest to add another option for c: Freelance Security Expert. They are highly paid and is a quite respected job but it may require some certified courses like Cisco’s etc. But the ultimate choice is yours And my siggestion would be to consider about Computer Network Specialist or Computer Security Expert. Enjoy.

can i start community college then change majors after i graduate/transfer to a four year college?

im planning on going to community college for computer engineering technology, computer support specialist or networking support specialist. after i finish i plan on transferring to a four year college for information technology [IT] or Computer/Information Sciences – General. my question is when i transfer will i have to spend another four years in college and start all over and will all/most of my credits transfer? or will i only spend another two years in college?
also both schools im planning on attending are in the same city.
sorry i meant technical school not community college

Free PC Help staff answers:

First off, you don’t declare a major in a community or junior college. The things you will be taking there will be core required classes, such as a couple of English courses, some math, social and hard sciences, etc. You will then not have to take those when you transfer, instead you will be focusing on your IT plans for a major. The benefits are that you will get the required stuff out of the way in small classrooms which offer more individualized attention from the instructors rather than sit amongst 300 other Freshman in a 4-year university, and save a ton of money in the process.
Another plus is that attending two schools in the same town means the guidance counselors at the junior college will know exactly which courses will transfer, saving you time and money.

IT job in USA. What certification do I need for a job?

I work in Romania as a computer support specialist plus some networking for about 3 years now. I dont have any certifications but I have a lot of experience. I want to come in the US but can I get a job only with experience?

Free PC Help staff answers:

Yes. Unlike some other professions like doctors or nursing, you can get work without government licenses or formal education. Altho its up to the person doing the hiring to decide whether he wants to see some formal education.

Robert asks…

which of these 3 jobs is best? ?

1. IT- PROGRAMMER/ANALYST
2. IT- NETWORK SPECIALIST
3. IT- COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST

I would like to know which of these 3 jobs has the most job stability, least manual labor, makes the most money, and is most in demand now and in the future. My expected graduation date is between 2012-2014.

Free PC Help staff answers:

In terms of money, the job that makes the most money is 1, followed by 2 and 3. But you need to love programming to be in 1. My college classmate loves programming and she is doing pretty well in 1.

In terms of least manual labor, definately 1 has the least. If you enjoy sitting on your a** all day and look at rows after rows of tiny codes that is the job for you. Also you will be working with only IT people mostly.

3 is kind of a entry level to 2. Personally my first IT job fresh out of college is 3 then i slowly move up. Instead of network, i went into systems. But you will need to be a rather calm person for the role of 3 because you will be handling a lot of crap, nasty, downright annoying customers who will curse at you and your family with words like f*** … And stuff .. Haha you have to be able to take that.

All 3 have stability besically the easies job to get is 3, followed by 1 or 2 depending on your industry. All 3 jobs will be in demand so you don’t have to worry.

What Education Do I Need For a Career in IT?

I plan on my first IT job being a computer support specialist, then working my way up to becoming a network systems administrator. Are there any specific degrees or certifications that would qualify me for these positions? Would an associates degree be sufficient?

Free PC Help staff answers:

To get a good job in an IT field you have to either have a bachelor’s degree or a certificate from a good computer program. I have attached a place that lists out all types of programs that you were mentioning looking into. It explains all about the programs and what the difference is between them. IT is a really good field to get into. They are always hiring and it pays really well. I hope this helps you out. If you would like to find schools in your area for an IT program just put your zip code in the search box and it will pull up all the schools around you that offer the programs you are interested in. Good luck, I hope this helps!
