Mary asks…

Need help from a System Support Technician qualified in IT Networks…?

Can somebody help me understand what a crossover cable is…

The simple differences between Cat 3, Cat 5, Cat 5e, Cat 6 cables…

How to create a LAN network for 1 room consisting of 20 computers, need them all connected, a working topology they can use (most likely star topology) and a switch, and I think, a server too (money no object)… Need to explain, describe and justify the choice of each hardware & the chosen topology..

Many thanks for your help, I did a Level 2 General course and when I moved onto Level 3, I switched to the System Support section.. I’m in the deep end now haha… I’ve only been learning about computer networks for a month.

You got the answers for Cat, etc.

In the real world, we would use a 24 port MANAGED switch. The switch would have some uplink, fiber or bonded, and we would use VLANS to separate stuff out at layer 2.

The switch would of course plug into some router.

They all have their good points. Do you actually like all of them?
Start by crossing out what you don’t like at all then if still in doubt ask some people who are taking the course. If still in doubt…flick a coin.
I would like being a Computer Engineering Technician but that’s just me. Follow what you first take a liking to.

Maria asks…

In the IT field as a desktop support tech..but want to move into networking?

I have about 4.5 years of IT experience (helpdesk, bench tech, desktop support w/minimal networking) and i am currently studying for my a+ b/c my boss is riding me like a virgin at a prison rodeo.i am also studying for net+ how difficult would it be for me to transition into networking i have asked my coworkers and i get blank stares and some speel about how it would be difficult for me to transition seeing as how i do not have any experience and they tend to only hire men..yada yada yada. are there any jobs that i can apply for once i get my net+ that i can go for that would give me the base 6 months of experience. what jobs could i apply for that would get me the experience employers are looking for ? i have seen jobs for NOC, computer network technician etc.. my long term goals are cyber security so once i am in a networking position(fingers crossed) i would like to go for my security + and make the transition. on a side not i am thinking about going into the military. thanks for your help

Your situation sounds nearly identical to mine… I want to get further into Networking. I only have about 1.5 years experience though. I have the CompTIA trifecta already though. (A+, N+, Sec+). I got Net+ in February 2010. My resume has been on Careerbuilder for a while, for instance. Following Net+ no one ever contacted me about a Networking role, just Help Desk stuff. I also have thought about Cyber Security as a longer term goal too… Got Sec+ in November.

My advice, at least what I’m doing… Try to start studying for the Windows Server 2008 certifications… Their numbers are 70-640, 70-642, and 70-646 to start. If you get all 3 of those, you will earn the title of MCITP: Server Administrator. Once you reach that, then that can justify you putting your resume out there in the hopes of landing a JUNIOR Network Admin role… Like, something where you can work with the heavier networking stuff but still receive some handholding. That’s what I’m shooting for anyway; I’ve done 640 and 642 is next on my list.

Honestly now that it’s 2011 and the CompTIA trifecta must be renewed every 3 years now… I wouldn’t worry so much about Net+, I think you’d be better off jumping right into the Microsoft stuff.

Eventually you can also go for CCNA and CCNA security. And then CCNP Security. And perhaps CCIE security… So you can make $100K a year. It’s a beautiful thought.

P.S. Girls that know their tech are sexy. Lol.

Network+ Certification or Cisco Certification?

Hey I’m 22, since the economy has really hit hard here in Atlanta, I been trying to find a job for the past 6 months. I have my A+ and for the past 6 years I worked as a Tier 2 Network Technical Support Engineer and an On-site Computer Technical Support Technician. I was wondering which one would be better for me to pursue to help me find a job and what is the difference, Network+ Certification or Cisco Certification? please help
And also i would like to ask, Does the Network+ certification ever expires and needs renewing like the Cisco?

Free PC Help staff answers:

There both good certifications to have but if you get your Cisco CCNA or CCNP there usually worth a lot more on a resume then the Network+.

The Network+ basically is networking 101 its meant for beginners and only scratches the surface of most networking topics. Once you get the Network+ exam it does not expire although every few years they do update the exam and you have the opportunity to retake the new exam if you want to be most up to date on the exam objectives.

The Cisco CCNA or CCNP go a lot deeper into the networking topics then the Network+ does. It’s also a lot harder to get then the network+ but its worth a lot more to employers and usually you can get a better paying job if you have one.

In your situation I would get one of the Cisco Certifications because the Network+ isn’t going to get you a better job then you already have.

If your unsure about your networking knowledge I’d recommend getting the Network+ to help get you up to speed before you have to go into the deep end with the Cisco exams.
