Charles asks…
Which computer coursework should I choose?
The college in my hometown offers 5 degrees involving IT:
-Digital Media
-Computer Support Technician
-Network Systems Technician
-Administrative Assistant
-Web Development
I was wondering which program would offer the most promising future. I just bought my house, so I can’t really move to another city to study something else, so I need to keep it local. Also, if anybody knows what a salary range for any of these career fields would be, that would also be great.

All are very good with a great future. But the best would be Computer Support Technician. The machines always need work and a good tech is worth their weight in gold.

Go to: http://www.salary.com
No matter what you pick don’t expect to make 80k right our of college. If you are lucky and depending on where you are at you might start as a Programmer around $25,000 or as a Hardware Tech around $20,000.
In the computer field experience pays, college doesn’t but it will get you in the door.

Sandra asks…
Which of these computer certificate combinations are more valuable? (Network+ and Cisco CCNA) or …?
(1)Network + and Cisco CCNA
(2)A+ Essentials and IT Technician, and Network + and Security +
(3)Microsoft Certified Information Technology Professional in Windows Server 2008
(4)Comp TIA A+ Essentials and A+ Network Technicican and Comp TIA Network +
My reason for asking is I am looking into these education programs in Pittsburgh, and would like to know anything about the computer support and networking fields that these courses lead to occupations in. Are there jobs in them, and the outlook for them. Anything at all you can tell me would be appreciated. Thank you.
Thanks Mark. I appreciate your insight. Those are the first thoughts I’ve heard from people outside of the school, that perspective is exactly what I wanted.

Free PC Help staff answers:
There is always work out there for competent network engineers. Network + and Cisco CCNA would be a good start but there are many specialties that you could go into from there.
Security training is a plus too.
It really depends on what you are happiest doing. I love networking, network design and engineering. I can’t stand working on people’s computers after they have fouled them up with malware and the like.
If you look on Craigslist in your area, you will find many postings for computer support and desktop help. The fact is that there are plenty of people out there that want to “fix” computers, some of them are actually good at it.
All that said, remember this:
Do what makes you happy because you won’t get tired of doing it and it will not be “work”. If you choose something just because you think it’s lucrative, and you end up hating it, you will find yourself looking for another line of work.

Donald asks…
top computer job in demand?
What is the top computer job in demand?
Some jobs are Computer engineer, Computer programer, Computer network specialist, Computer service technician. Computer software engineer, Computer support specialist, and Computer system anaylst.
They all pay decent money, I want to know which 1 is highest in demand. Please list your order of what jobs are highest in demand from 1-10 that have to deal with computers.

Free PC Help staff answers:
Titles don’t exactly mean everything. Different companies have different titles for the same type of jobs.
That being said, in general engineers and programmers will get paid more than technicians and support people. The term “specialist” can mean many things, it is too vague. Analysts can get paid a lot, but it all depends on the exact nature of the job.
But instead of just going after the money, you should figure out what you like doing best, and what you are best at doing. In technology, if you excel in your job it’s likely because you like what you do, not because you get paid. I’d strongly advise getting a college degree and then certifications in your chosen field. If you are then good at what you are doing, the money will come.
