How to standout in computer tech support interview?
I’m going to have an interview next week for a computer tech support. But, I have no experience in computers. How do I ace the interview and get the job?

Free PC Help staff answers:
Well you would need to shove a very large interest in computer/repair, http://www.jobbankusa.com/interview_questions_answers/free_samples_examples/technology_skills.html here is a example of questions you’ll might be asked.
Just to add to this If they are offering full training then just tell them what you are good at and what your education is. Tell them you are good at problem solving and managing a workload and get on with people in a professional situation.
If they are not offering full training then don’t bother going. If you have “no experience in computers” then other people going to interview will have the experience.
That job requires good experience (unless – like I said – they are offering full training) what happens if they give you a technical test, you need to be ready for that aswell, because your lacking in IT skills you need to use your people skills and attuide to impress.
Since i did 3+years at college before i started going into the IT industry starting at the lowest scale working in a small computer shop dealing with the general public, and then moving up to large and large shops and then onto major companies..

Linda asks…
Do you need a degree to work at a computer tech support job?
My boyfriend knows everything about computers and is practically a computer genius. But he works at a crappy factory job. He wants to get a job dealing with computers. Does he need to get a degree first? Or can he just go to computer repair shops or pc/tech places in town and look for jobs there?

Free PC Help staff answers:
He may be better off just starting his own side business because most computer tech support jobs do want to see academic credentials.
Once he builds up his own clientele and is known to be competent and professional, between word of mouth and having some business cards made up, he may be able to support himself and do it full-time after word gets out.

Donna asks…
Why would a computer tech support tell someone to hold the power button for 4 minutes?
A Gateway tech told a friend of mine to hold their power buttin to do some kind of reset, has anyone heard of this? Not four seconds, but four minutes?

Free PC Help staff answers:
I had an HP Technician tell me to hold the power button on the processor for two minutes one time to try and clear the PSU before he had me unplug the processor. I don’t know exactly what this did, but when I plugged the processor back in, the processor was cleared and it only took the tech about five minutes to get me up and running again.
